Frequently Asked Questions

Orientation Leaders with FAQ signs

When is Orientation?

Orientation sessions for fall 2006 will begin in April and continue throughout the summer. There is also a session in January, for students who start at the spring semester.

How do I sign up for Orientation?
Orientation information will be mailed out to all newly admitted freshman, inviting them to sign up for orientation.

How much does Orientation cost?
The non-refundable fee for all incoming students to attend Orientation is $65 and is assessed on the Fall tuition statement. The fee should not be paid before that. This fee covers lunch and refreshments, materials and all other program-related costs.

If parents/guardians, guests or spouses will be attending Orientation, there is a $16 per person fee. This also covers the cost of food and materials for the day. This fee is added to the Fall tuition statement or it can be paid before then. Cash and checks (made payable to UW-Parkside) are accepted at any time.

What time does Orientation start?
Check-in for Orientation will begin at 7:45am and the first presentation begins at 8:15am.

How long is Orientation?
Orientation is from 8:15am until 4:30pm. Students are required to attend the entire program. At 4:30pm there are optional tours available. At the conclusion of the Orientation program you may also visit any campus departments or make purchases at the Bookstore.

Where do I park for Orientation?
Park in the Union parking lot, in any of the unmarked spaces. Do not park in metered, handicapped or reserved spaces. You will not need a permit on the day of Orientation.

Do I need to bring anything to Orientation?
Please bring your online ID and password.

You may want to bring a writing utensil and paper, but everything else will be provided for you.

Are parents required to attend Orientation?
No, parents are not required to attend Orientation, but it’s highly recommended!

For parents and family who are interested and able to attend, there is a special program just for them. They will have an opportunity to hear from faculty, staff and current students and will become more knowledgeable about the campus environment. There is a $16 fee for each parent, which covers the cost of materials and lunch.

When do I register?
You will register for classes at Orientation and leave with a complete schedule that day.

What else happens at Orientation?
There will be special sessions where you will talk with current students, faculty and staff about academic and social aspects of the campus. You will also get your student I.D. picture taken. Lunch is provided.

I’ve already been on a tour of campus; do I have to do it again?
No! We understand that most of our entering students have toured the campus already. At the end of the Orientation day there is an option to go on a tour of the general campus or we will tailor a tour to the residence halls, Ranger Hall and University Apartments, or the new Sports and Activities Center.

Does it matter which Orientation session I attend?
Earlier is always better. As the summer progresses and more new students register, the class selection does become limited. You will get classes that you need, but you may not get your first choices!

What if I can’t attend an Orientation date?
All new students are expected to attend Orientation. If you choose not to attend any Orientation dates you will need to make alternate arrangements with the Advising Center. Please note that other arrangements are made AFTER the completion of all of the regularly scheduled Orientation sessions. This means that class availability will not be as favorable as if you attend an Orientation session. Since Orientation is mandatory, the fee is still assessed. There are no refunds.

What if I’m transferring from another school?
That’s great, we’re glad you selected UW-Parkside!
If you are transferring with fewer than 16 credits, you are still required to attend Orientation. Even though you’ve already experienced college, there are helpful things to know about UW-PARKSIDE and we want your transition here to be a smooth one.

If you are transferring with 16 or more credits, you are not required to attend Orientation, but we still encourage attendance because you’ll receive valuable information! If you have determined your academic major, contact that department; otherwise you should contact the Advising Center (262/595-2040).

What if I was in the Youth Options Program?
We’re excited that you’ll be continuing your education at UW-Parkside!

Since you were still in high school while you participated in the Youth Options Program and haven’t accumulated more than 24 credits, you will still be considered an entering freshmen. Orientation will be an added benefit to you because you will learn even more about UW-Parkside and the focus will be on you as a college student.

What if I still have more questions?
